What is Basecast
Basecast is Motionworks' population movement intelligence family. Where Placecast measures what happens at specific places and Pathcast measures traffic along linear segments, Basecast measures movement at the broadest geographic scale: total trips and person-miles traveled for the population living in counties and Designated Market Areas (DMAs) across the United States.
The unit of analysis in Basecast is the resident population of a geography, not visitors to it. Every metric — trips, person-miles traveled, trips per capita, stayed-at-home counts, and commute tallies — is anchored to people whose primary residence falls within the reporting county or DMA. This makes Basecast the right signal for understanding how a market's own population is moving, as distinct from who happens to be present in that market on a given day.
Basecast data are derived from trips observed in the Motionworks panel and processed through the Motionworks Population Intelligence Platform — the same methodology family that underlies Popcast and Placecast. Trips are summed to total counts and person-miles within each county or DMA for each date. Population weighting scales the observed panel to the resident population of each geography. Data are released monthly, covering each day of the prior month, with a 15-day latency after the close of the reporting period. The historical time series extends back to January 1, 2019.

Methodology summary
Basecast is derived from trips observed in the Motionworks panel, processed through the Motionworks Population Intelligence Platform — the same methodology family that powers Popcast and Placecast. Trips are identified from quality-filtered, opted-in mobile location signals, then summed to total counts and person-miles within each county or DMA on each calendar date. Population weighting scales the observed panel to the resident population of each geography using Census-based control totals.
The product schema extends beyond raw trip counts to include derived behavioral indicators: stayed-at-home counts, zero-trip persons, went-to-work persons, and both mean and median per-capita trip and person-miles metrics. This enables both aggregate trend analysis and distributional comparisons across markets and time periods.
